Aphasia

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to the brain, typically in areas responsible for speech and comprehension. It affects a person’s ability to speak, understand language, read, or write, but it does not impact intelligence. Aphasia is most commonly caused by stroke, but it can also result from head injuries, brain tumors, or neurodegenerative diseases. There are many different types of fluent and non-fluent aphasias that range from ‘mild’ to ‘severe.’ Anomic Aphasia yields word-finding deficits and can be considered ‘mild’ because other areas are preserved. Global aphasia, on the other hand, is a more severe impairment of both speech production and language comprehension. A speech-language pathologist will do an in-depth assessment to determine the type and severity of aphasia and create a plan of care catered to the client’s areas of need.
